WASHINGTON, D.C. –Akin announced today that former top health advisor for the Senate Finance Committee Majority Shawn Maree Bishop has joined the firm as a senior advisor in the firm’s lobbying & public policy practice in Washington, D.C. With three decades of federal health policy experience in both the public and private sector, Bishop’s addition greatly enhances Akin’s bipartisan health policy offering at a time of increased demand from pharmaceutical, biotechnology and provider group clients.

Prior to joining the firm, Bishop served as Chief Health Advisor for the Senate Finance Committee under Chair Ron Wyden (D-OR) and before that as professional staff under former Chair Max Baucus (D-MT). On the Hill, Bishop played a key role in the drafting and passing of some of the most significant health care related legislation of the last 20 years including the Medicaid, CHIP, Medicare and Affordable Care Act marketplace programs. Bishop additionally oversaw the development of the health provisions included in the Inflation Reduction Act and the Medicaid and Medicare provisions of the most recent Consolidated Appropriations Acts. She also brings valuable experience in the executive branch as a former health care analyst at The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and principal analyst at the Congressional Budget Office.

“Shawn has a unique combination of highly sought after health policy experience from both the public and private sectors, coupled with key relationships in Congress, the executive branch, CMS, and throughout the health care community which will substantively benefit both our health policy and health regulatory clients,” said Akin Chair Kim Koopersmith. “We are delighted to welcome Shawn to Akin.”

“Shawn is a true health care policy heavyweight, having played a critical role in developing and negotiating numerous pieces of major health care legislation,” said Brian Pomper, co-head of Akin’s lobbying & public policy group. “She adds tremendous depth to our advocacy capabilities across biopharmaceuticals, medical devices, hospitals, physician providers, behavioral health providers, and data analytic companies.”

Bishop’s addition to the firm will bolster its best-in-class bipartisan health policy practice as she teams up with Akin senior advisor Anna Abram, a respected health policy thought leader who served in the first Trump administration as Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Deputy Commissioner for Policy, Legislation and International Affairs, Associate Director at the Domestic Policy Council under President George W. Bush and Health Policy Director to Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) at the Senate HELP Committee during her more than decade tenure on the Hill. Bishop’s arrival follows the recent addition of Akin senior policy advisor Jocelyn Wiles who served as a key health policy strategist on Capitol Hill while working for members including Rep. Kathy Castor (D-FL) and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Ca).

“Health care is always an active area for policymakers and the stakes continue to be high for the patients, providers, innovators, and companies across the health care and life sciences sector navigating this constantly evolving legislative and regulatory landscape. I am excited to join Akin’s top-notch policy practice where my experience in health policy, strategy, and relationships on both sides of the aisle, will be critical to driving results for our clients,” said Bishop.
