Am Law Gives Double Shout Out to Akin Gump Trade Teams for Trio of Pivotal Solar Tariff Wins
Contact:
(Washington, D.C.) – Teams from Akin Gump led by international trade partner Matthew Nicely received two runners-up “shout outs” from The American Lawyer in its Litigator of the Week series for securing three pivotal wins regarding solar panel imports at the U.S. Department of Commerce and U.S. Court of International Trade (CIT).
Am Law notes that on behalf of NextEra—the largest developer of utility-scale solar facilities in the U.S.—Akin Gump successfully convinced the Commerce Department to reject a petition from a “coalition of solar energy component makers in the U.S. asking the agency to extend antidumping and countervailing duties on imports of certain components from China to imports of the same products from Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.”
Mr. Nicely was joined on the team by fellow partner Yujin McNamara, counsel Julia Eppard and associate Sydney Stringer.
Then, in a pair of matters at the CIT, Am Law highlights Akin Gump’s successful representation of:
- i. the Solar Energy Industries Association in a case that challenged President Trump’s Proclamation withdrawing the U.S. Trade Representative’s exemption from safeguard duties on double-sided solar panel imports.
- ii. Invenergy in its challenge of the USTR’s own attempt to withdraw the bifacial panel exclusion.
In addition to Mr. Nicely, the Akin Gump team on these cases included Supreme Court and appellate partner James Tysse and international trade counsel Daniel Witkowski and Devin Sikes.
