(Washington, D.C.) – Former Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-TX) has joined Akin as a senior consultant in Washington, D.C. Chairman Brady’s extensive experience in tax, trade, healthcare and energy adds to Akin’s existing strength in those areas and will serve as a valuable resource to the firm’s clients.
Chairman Brady served in public office for more than three decades, including 26 years as the U.S. representative from Texas’s 8th congressional district, and on the U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means, serving as its Chairman from 2015–2019. During his tenure in Congress, Chairman Brady served as the author and driving force in the development of the historic Tax Cuts & Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA), which is set to expire at the end of 2025, as well as a key leader in the negotiation of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement.
“We are honored to welcome Chairman Brady to the firm,” said Hunter Bates, former chief of staff to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and co-head of Akin’s lobbying & public policy practice. “His role as the architect of the TCJA during his tenure as chair of the Ways and Means Committee provides him with a unique insight that will be invaluable for our clients as we approach the TCJA’s expiration in 19 months. Chairman Brady will be a vital part of our team’s focused effort to preserve tax cuts that stimulate the economy and create jobs.”
“Chairman Brady’s tax, trade, healthcare and energy experience aligns perfectly with Akin’s practice,” said Brian Pomper, co-head of Akin’s lobbying & public policy practice. “With the novel USMCA review process starting in earnest next year and the need to navigate difficult trade issues like the Section 301 tariffs on China, Brady’s distinguished career at the forefront of shaping trade policy will bring unparalleled perspective and insight to our clients at a critical time.”
Beyond his work on tax and trade, Chairman Brady also has extensive experience in healthcare and energy, having played a leadership role in Medicare modernization and innovation and negotiating an end to the 40-year ban on selling U.S. crude oil internationally.
“I am thrilled to join Akin,” said Chairman Brady. “The firm’s reputation in the areas under the jurisdiction of the Ways and Means Committee is unparalleled, and that made it a natural choice for me. Some of the most respected professionals in the industry on tax, trade, energy and healthcare call Akin home. I’m looking forward to working with this deep bench to help Akin’s clients during this pivotal time. As a Texan, I’m also delighted to join a firm with a prestigious brand and deep roots in the Lone Star State.”
Chairman Brady’s arrival marks a unique moment, when three former House Committee chairs will all be working at Akin at the same time. Former Ways and Means Committee Chairman Brady joins former Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) and former Judiciary Committee and Science, Space & Technology Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-TX) as part of the Akin family.
