(Washington, D.C.) – Akin Gump announced today that Nathan J. Oleson has rejoined the firm as a partner in its labor and employment practice in Washington, D.C. Mr. Oleson had previously been a partner at the firm from 2008-2014, departing to serve as executive vice president and general counsel to national fitness center chain 24 Hour Fitness, where he helped guide it through its sale to new private equity ownership.
Mr. Oleson has broad experience handling complex litigation and class action claims, with a particular focus on wage and hour matters. His practice includes defending employers in litigation and class action matters involving claims under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), Title VII, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, and state and local employment laws.
“Continuing to build on our nationally recognized labor and employment practice—particularly, adding depth to our complex litigation capabilities—has been a goal for the firm,” stated Akin Gump chairperson Kim Koopersmith. “Being able to welcome back someone like Nate, who has a strong track record of success in this area, established relationships with many of the firm’s clients and valuable knowledge from his experience as in-house general counsel, represents an outstanding opportunity for us.”
In addition to his litigation and advice work for clients, Mr. Oleson has served for more than a decade on the editorial board of the ABA’s Section of Labor and Employment Law’s treatise on the Fair Labor Standards Act, published by BNA, and was a contributor to EEOC Litigation and Charge Resolution (BNA 2nd. ed. 2014).
“Nate’s skill set and history of success in complex litigation and class action cases, coupled with the unique perspective he brings having served as general counsel to a large, national company, provides a great addition to our team and to our clients,” said Robert G. Lian Jr., head of Akin Gump’s labor and employment practice.
Added Mr. Oleson, “I could not be more excited to come back to the firm where I began my legal career and have so many strong relationships. I look forward to bringing my background and experience to bear on behalf of both new and longstanding clients.”
Mr. Oleson earned his J.D., magna cum laude in 1999 from the Georgetown University Law Center, and his B.A., cum laude, from American University in 1996.
