(Los Angeles) – Akin Gump litigation partner Peter Altman has been selected as one of Daily Journal’s Top White Collar Lawyers for 2021—the publication’s annual supplement of California’s premier white collar lawyers.
In the profile of Mr. Altman, Daily Journal highlights his tenure at the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) Division of Enforcement in Los Angeles, where he garnered significant experience in complex government investigations and litigation, which, Mr. Altman notes, he calls on “daily to help clients think through and navigate challenging issues.”
Among his recent work, the publication highlights Mr. Altman’s representation of Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX—one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency derivatives trading platforms—in a series of litigations, including a criminal case arising from alleged anti-money laundering violations. The trial is set for March 2022.
The publication also notes Mr. Altman’s successful representation of clients at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission and SEC, in which the cases were settled without charges filed against his clients and the clients remained anonymous—a highly favorable outcome. “Success at keeping names out of the media is a big part of white collar practice. The biggest successes are often the ones you never hear about,” Mr. Altman said.
