July 1, 2024

Summary

HB 1018 was enacted in April 2024 and became effective on July 1, 2024. It prohibits financial institutions from discriminating in the provision of financial services against entities that are engaged in legal commerce of firearms or ammunition. It also prohibits financial institutions from using a firearms code to distinguish firearm retailers from other retailers. For alleged violations of these prohibitions, the law permits the Attorney General to investigate after providing written notice and allows any person who is subject to an alleged violation to petition the state Attorney General to investigate. Further, the law prohibits government entities from keeping a record or registry of privately owned firearms.
