Areej advises clients on various international trade law and policy matters, including navigating complex FTA negotiations with a broad range of countries. She also represents sovereign governments in international trade dispute proceedings before the World Trade Organization (WTO) and other international fora.
Furthermore, Areej provides counsel to sovereign governments on international trade, economic affairs and strategic policy matters. With over fifteen years of experience, she leverages her unique blend of government, industry and legal experience to help clients shape policy and navigate international trade rules.
Prior to her legal career, Areej held senior leadership positions in the United Arab Emirates’ public and private sectors, where she led large teams in developing and implementing corporate strategies and business plans, structuring and negotiating key partnerships and joint ventures, and driving organizational turnaround and restructuring efforts.
- Represented a sovereign government in over 20 FTA negotiations, providing strategic and legal advice in relation to key trading partners.
- Advised a sovereign government on trade, economic policy and other strategic matters, driving impactful outcomes, including the successful advocacy for the removal of a United States Trade Representative (USTR) designation addressing inadequate intellectual property rights concerns.
- Represented a sovereign government in international arbitration and litigation in the International Court of Justice and the WTO.
- Advised a large corporation with assets and operations in the United States and China on government relations issues.
