Biography

Chance Hiner represents debtors, creditors and other stakeholders in complex chapter 11 cases and out-of-court restructurings. His experience extends across an array industries including energy, health care, pharmaceuticals and financial services.

Prior to joining Akin, he was a law clerk to the Honorable Harlin D. Hale in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Texas. 

Representative Work
  • SVB: Counsel to the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors in the chapter 11 case of SVB Financial Group, the former parent company of Silicon Valley Bank, involving more than $3.4 billion in liabilities.
  • Pipeline Health: Counsel to the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors in the chapter 11 cases of Pipeline Health and its affiliates, an independent health care network with hospitals in California, Texas and Illinois, involving more than $603 million in liabilities.
  • Brazos Electric Power Cooperative: Counsel to Tri-County Electric in the chapter 11 case of Brazos, an electrical generation and transmission cooperative, involving approximately $2.1 billion in liabilities.
  • Just Energy: Counsel to the prepetition lenders and debtor in possession (DIP) lenders in the chapter 15 cases of Just Energy and its affiliates, a leading North American distributor of electricity & natural gas, involving more than $440 million in liabilities.
  • Mallinckrodt: Counsel to the Official Committee of Opioid Related Claimants in the chapter 11 cases of Mallinckrodt and its affiliates, an American-Irish pharmaceuticals company, involving hundreds of billions of dollars of asserted claims. Restructuring of the Year (The Deal)
  • Nordic Aviation Capital: Counsel to noteholders in an ad hoc group in the chapter 11 cases of Nordic Aviation Capital and its affiliates, the then-fifth largest aircraft leasing company in the world, involving $5.9 billion in liabilities.
  • Remington Outdoor: Counsel to the Restructuring Committee in the chapter 11 cases of Remington Outdoor Company and its affiliates, a designer, manufacturer and marketer of firearms, ammunition and related products, and in the sale of the company and its affiliates, involving approximately $230 million in liabilities.
  • LifeCare Holdings: Counsel to the company, a long-term acute care hospital chain, in its chapter 11 case involving $227.5 million in liabilities, and also in the auction and sale of substantially all the debtors’ assets.
  • Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E): Counsel to the ad hoc committee of senior unsecured noteholders in the chapter 11 cases of PG&E and its affiliates, the largest energy utility in the U.S., involving over $30 billion in liabilities. To date, this is the seventh-largest bankruptcy in U.S. history. Innovation Award (New York Law Journal)
  • Martin Midstream Partners: Counsel to the debtor and its affiliate, a diversified midstream business operating in the Gulf Coast, in restructuring more than $364 million of unsecured notes, which involved an out-of-court exchange, tender offer and solicitation of votes on a prepackaged plan of reorganization.
  • PetroQuest Energy: Counsel to an ad hoc group of noteholders in the chapter 11 cases of PetroQuest Energy and its affiliates, an independent oil & gas company with operations in Texas and Louisiana, involving $300 million in liabilities.
