Daniel is the Program Lead for Akin’s award-winning legal data productivity platform, OverRuled. OverRuled provides a suite of tools related to U.S. sanctions and export control regulation and enforcement that enables users to search for and analyze previously unsearchable enforcement actions, identify agency-issued guidance, and calculate estimated penalties for suspected violations. The platform utilizes heat maps and dynamic graphs to help users visualize raw data.
Daniel is regularly involved in compliance matters relating to sanctions, export controls, and anticorruption laws and regulations, including economic sanctions administered by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), and trade controls under the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
Daniel’s experience also encompasses an array of disputes work involving international companies, as well as assisting with highly sensitive internal investigations.
- Seconded to HSBC’s Middle East headquarters in Dubai to support the bank’s Monitor Liaison Team with the 2017 review of the United Arab Emirates, which related to HSBC’s Deferred Prosecution Agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice, regarding breaches of sanctions and anti-money laundering regulations.
- Represented BNP Paribas during the U.S. Department of Justice’s investigation into sanctions violations relating to Iran, Cuba and Sudan, resulting in a record $8.9 billion penalty.
- Represented Société Générale during the U.S. Department of Justice’s investigation into sanctions violations involving Iran, Cuba and Sudan, resulting in a $54 million penalty.
- Acted for the main contractor, a Fortune 500 company, in two parallel ICC arbitrations seated in Doha, Qatar, with the disputed amounts for both arbitrations exceeding $400 million.
- On behalf of the United Kingdom‘s (U.K.’s) Serious Fraud Office, assisted a FTSE 100 company with an internal fraud, bribery and corruption investigation relating to alleged illegal business practices.
