Biography
  • Extensive experience in contentious and non-contentious aspects of U.K. and European cross-border financial restructuring, corporate restructuring and insolvency law.
  • Advises on complex, high-value and multijurisdictional finance disputes across a range of sectors.

Justine is a counsel in Akin’s international litigation & arbitration practice, and has particularly deep experience in financial restructuring and insolvency law with a focus on complex, cross-border matters. Prior to commencing her legal career, Justine worked in the mergers and acquisitions department of a large global investment bank.

She was recognized as “One to Watch” in Insolvency and Financial Restructuring Law in the inaugural 2022 edition of Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in Canada.

Representative Work
  • Acted for an ad hoc group of Class A creditors in the interim restructuring proposed by the Thames Water group.
  • Acted for an ad hoc group of supporting noteholders in the restructuring of the Adler group, a German real estate property management and development business, in relation to its contested English restructuring plan proceedings that resulted in the first restructuring plan proceeding to be considered by the Court of Appeal.
  • Acted for an ad hoc group of senior lenders of the Wittur group, a German elevator components manufacturer, on the comprehensive financial restructuring of the group.
  • Acted for the coordinating committee of lenders on the comprehensive financial restructuring of the Schur Flexibles group, a German/Austrian plastics manufacturer, implemented by means of a debt-to-equity swap.
  • Acted for an ad hoc group of lenders in the restructuring of the IGM Resins group, a large Dutch chemicals manufacturer.
  • Acted for an ad hoc group of secured creditors of Concordia International Corp. on its $3.7 billion restructuring transaction implemented under the Canada Business Corporations Act (CBCA).
  • Acted for an ad hoc group of unsecured noteholders in the $1.1 billion restructuring of Jupiter Resources Inc.
  • Acted for an ad hoc group of senior secured noteholders in the restructuring of Stoneway Capital Corporation, an Argentinian power generation business, implemented under the CBCA and chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.
  • Acted for Sears Canada Inc. in one of Canada’s largest and most complex retail Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) insolvencies.
