- Represents investment management firms, technology corporations and other private and public companies on IP, AI, public policy and cybersecurity, privacy & data protection matters.
- Holds Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional (AIGP) certification, as well as Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP)/US and CIPP/E credentials through the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).
Ryan serves as counsel in Akin’s intellectual property (IP) group and New York office. He represents clients in district court and in Section 337 investigations at the ITC. Ryan also advises leading investment funds, technology corporations and multinational companies on an array of matters, including those involving IP, AI, public policy and cybersecurity, privacy & data protection issues.
His litigation experience includes identifying prior art, drafting documents, overseeing filings, advising in-house counsel and managing expert witnesses. Prior to joining Akin, Ryan worked at two other major law firms, where he handled district court patent litigation, inter partes review (IPR) proceedings, portfolio management and ITC investigations.
Ryan leverages his multidisciplinary background in life sciences and technology across a number of complex fields, including computer vision, streaming video, wearables, nucleic acid amplification, blood screening and medical devices. He provides guidance and counseling to clients regarding privacy and data protection for a range of technologies, including biometrics and AI-automated data processing. He also advises clients on General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and other data privacy regulations, including draft state and federal privacy legislation.
Clients rely on Ryan to provide comprehensive assessments of AI-related regulations across different jurisdictions. He offers guidance on developing AI standards, advises on AI-related enforcement actions and identifies potential risks associated with the deployment of AI. Amidst the recent adoption of the landmark EU Artificial Intelligence Act, U.S. agency rulemaking efforts, and proposed federal and state regulations, Ryan advises clients on the impact of these regulations and compliance obligations. His clients include developers, deployers and a wide range of other participants in the AI value chain.
In addition, Ryan has represented pro bono clients in federal court regarding civil rights issues, assisted applicants with various asylum and immigration proceedings, worked with organizations seeking to reform bail practices and has volunteered helping individuals in family court with domestic violence matters.
Ryan holds a J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School and a B.S. in biology from the University of Kansas. He is registered as a Patent Attorney with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Through the IAPP, Ryan holds the Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional (AIGP) certification and is a Certified Information Privacy Professional for both U.S. (CIPP/US) and Europe (CIPP/E). Prior to law school, he worked for a high-performance computing (HPC) company, building compute clusters and ancillary systems.
