Biography
  • Maintains a broad investment management practice, advising on a wide spectrum of issues unique to fund managers, sponsors and investors.
  • Represents large institutional investors and entrepreneurial fund sponsors and managers, with a particular focus on sovereign wealth funds.

Safal advises and represents clients with respect to all aspects of the structuring, formation and operation of alternative investment funds, including private equity, credit, real estate, infrastructure and hedge funds.

Safal’s clients include prominent asset managers and institutional investors, including some of the world’s leading sovereign wealth funds (SWFs). He advises clients on investments spanning geographies and strategies, including related carried interest and co-investment arrangements.

Prior to joining Akin, Safal was an associate attorney at other U.S. headquartered law firms where, in addition to his work representing sponsors on the formation and operation of their alternative investment funds, he represented numerous SWFs and other institutional investors on their investments into fund and co-investment structures.

Safal earned his LL.B. bachelor of laws from the London School of Economics and Political Science and completed an L.P.C. from BPP University.

Representative Work
  • Represented a global alternative investment manager on its European direct lending fund with a final fund size of €11 billion.
  • Represented an institutional asset manager on its stressed, distressed and event-driven situations fund with a final fund size of $2.4 billion.
  • Represented a private equity real estate firm on the formation of a $1.5 billion fund and co-investment structure.
  • Represented a private equity real estate manager on the formation of a $2.6 billion real estate fund.
  • Represented several leading GCC SWFs in fund investments across various strategies.
  • Represented a GCC alternative asset manager in several fund-of-funds investments across various strategies.
  • Represented a leading GCC SWF in its seed investment in a new platform of one of the world’s largest and leading alternative asset managers, as well as the inaugural investments of the platform.
  • Represented a leading GCC SWF in its acquisition of a direct minority stake in one of Europe’s leading alternative credit-focused asset managers.
  • Represented several leading GCC SWFs in a variety of GP-led co-investments across a variety of strategies, including secondaries, buyout, infrastructure and credit.
