(Washington, D.C.) – The American Lawyer has named a team from Akin Gump a runner-up for its Litigator of the Week series for securing a critical ruling by a federal judge in California denying class certification in a long-running case against the National Football League.
Am Law notes that the plaintiffs, former NFL players, “claimed the league was negligent in the way it allowed teams to distribute painkillers and other prescription drugs to keep players on the field.” However, the court found that the players failed to show that the law could be applied to a class of players, adding that a trial of the plaintiffs’ proposed class would become a “sprawling trainwreck.”
The Akin Gump team representing the NFL was led by labor and employment partner Dan Nash. He was joined by fellow labor and employment partners Stacey Eisenstein, Gregory Knopp and Nathan Oleson and counsel Elizabeth England and Jonathan Slowik; Supreme Court and appellate practice head Pratik Shah and partner James Tysse.
