(Washington, D.C.) – For the eleventh time in the past 12 years, Akin Gump has been named to The National Law Journal’s Appellate Hot List—a list of law firms that have handled exemplary appellate matters over the past year. The firm was recognized in particular for its victory before the Supreme Court in the case Azar v. Allina Health Services.
In a profile accompanying the selection, Pratik Shah, co-head of Akin Gump’s Supreme Court and appellate practice, discussed how the firm approached its appellate success over the past year, noting that the group worked closely with lawyers across the firm in areas such as health care, intellectual property, Indian law, labor and bankruptcy, which allowed it “to tackle the most complex matters.” As for what he considers the most satisfying element of appellate work, Mr. Shah described discovering a new argument “that can turn around a case.”
Finally, when asked about the most valuable lesson he learned as a young lawyer, Mr. Shah said, “If your non-lawyer spouse, significant other or friend doesn’t find your argument persuasive, then neither will a judge at oral argument.”
Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 900 lawyers in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
