Akin senior policy advisor Matthew Hittle has been quoted in the Part B News story “In Brooks-LaSure nomination for CMS chief, expect renewed focus on coverage, fed programs.” The article reports on President Biden’s pick of Chiquita Brooks-LaSure to lead the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
Brooks-LaSure, the article says, has decades of health policy experience, and helped develop certain Affordable Care Act (ACA) programs, which the article says shows Mr. Biden’s commitment to the Obama-era law.
If confirmed, Hittle said Brooks-LaSure and HHS-Secretary nominee Xavier Becerra will have “complementary roles” in the Biden-Harris health care team.
“Brooks-LaSure is steeped in policy and is a thought leader on all things ACA-related,” said Hittle. “She’s also a CMS veteran, meaning she’ll be effective from day one. Her nomination emphasizes the administration’s focus on practical, achievable ACA enhancement. Whatever his policy shortcomings, Becerra offers intimate familiarity with Washington and Democratic politics, as well as credibility with the left. His job will be to defend Brooks-LaSure’s ACA enhancement to a Democratic left flank agitating for policies like Medicare for All.”
Hittle was among the authors of an Akin client alert last month about Brooks-LaSure and, what was at the time, her reported nomination as CMS Administrator. To learn more, please click here.
