Biography
  • Advises on a wide range of domestic and cross-border debt restructurings, debt finance transactions and insolvencies.
  • Represents par and distressed investors, including investment funds, noteholders, bondholders and other creditor groups.

Emma advises on complex financial restructuring matters, with a focus on cross-border debt restructurings and debt finance transactions, advising large creditor groups, including institutional investors, as well as fund clients. Combining her sophisticated legal knowledge with a commercial approach, Emma is a trusted advisor on highly complex, fast-moving matters.

Notably, Emma was a key member of the Akin team advising the private placement noteholders in Nordic Aviation Capital’s $6-billion global restructuring.

Emma has been recognized by Euromoney Legal Media Group for inclusion in its Expert Guides: Rising Stars, was shortlisted for the EMEA Women in Business Law Awards Rising Star of the Year: Finance and is recognized as a Key Lawyer for corporate restructuring & insolvency in The Legal 500 UK.

Representative Work
  • Nordic Aviation Capital: Counsel to the private placement noteholders in relation to a waiver and deferral arrangement implemented through an Irish scheme of arrangement, and on the restructuring of more than $6 billion of the group’s debt through a chapter 11 plan.
  • Premier Oil: Counsel to the holders of private placement notes issued by Premier Oil plc on the $3.5-billion financial restructuring of Premier Oil, which involved a contested scheme of arrangement and subsequently the successful implementation of restructuring plans and ultimately the reverse takeover of the group.
  • Nordic Trustee AS: Counsel to the DOF Subsea bondholders, in a restructuring of the financial indebtedness of DOF ASA and its subsidiaries. DOF Subsea and the wider DOF Group are international providers of supply, shipping and subsea services.
  • Ozon: Counsel to the ad hoc group of convertible noteholders on the $750-million restructuring of Ozon Holdings PLC, Russia’s largest ecommerce platform.
  • ED&F Man: Counsel to various private placement noteholders on the restructuring of more than $1 billion in debt, including the grant of new security instruments in various jurisdictions, of ED&F Man Treasury Management, one of London’s oldest commodities brokers. Restructuring Deal of the Year (IFLR Europe Awards).
  • Interserve: Counsel to the holders of private placement notes on the financial restructurings of Interserve plc, a U.K.-based support services and construction company, through a consensual debt restructuring and the eventual balance sheet restructuring of the group through a pre-packaged administration sale.
  • Noble: Counsel to an ad hoc group of senior creditors of Noble, a Singapore-listed commodities trader, on the group's new financing and debt-for-equity swap, involving parallel schemes of arrangement in England and Bermuda and a “light touch” provisional liquidation in Bermuda.
  • Carillion: Counsel to the holders of private placement notes issued by Carillion plc, a British multinational construction and facilities management services company, on amendment negotiations aimed at addressing the group’s liquidity issues and restructuring the group’s balance sheet.
  • Afren: Counsel to the administrators of Afren plc, a U.K.-listed exploration and production group with oil assets in Africa and the Middle East, on the group’s administration and wind-down.
  • General Healthcare Group: Counsel to an ad hoc group of junior creditors on the c. £2 billion restructuring of GHG Propco, a U.K.-based health care group.
  • Frigoglass: Counsel to an ad hoc group of bondholders on the financial restructuring of Frigoglass, a Greek-listed glass and refrigeration business, involving a new capital injection and debt-for-equity swap implemented through a scheme of arrangement in the U.K.
