Biography
  • Advises on all aspects of sanctions, international trade, national security, foreign investment review and environment matters.
  • Previous experience includes time spent in financial services regulatory, litigation & investigations and derivatives & structured finance departments.
  • Prior to joining the firm, he also worked in a number of non-legal sectors including tech, academia, government and finance.

James Matson specializes in economic and trade sanctions, international trade, customs and export controls, national security, foreign investment review, anti-bribery and anti-corruption matters and environmental matters. He has experience in several industry sectors, principally energy, information technology and telecommunications, aerospace and defence, shipping, pharmaceuticals, financial services and funds.

Representative Work
  • Advising a global semiconductor manufacturer on a national security review conducted under the United Kingdom’s National Security and Investment Act by the Investment Security Unit at the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy.
  • Assisting one of the world’s largest technology companies with export control assessments and analyses for its cutting-edge hardware, including harmonised tariff code assessments.
  • Advising various large clients in the energy, IT, defence and telecommunications sectors regarding their sanctions compliance issues in relation to European Union and UK sanctions regimes particularly in relation to Russia.
  • Providing and coordinating global sanctions advice on significant and complex corporate transactions to multiple clients where a potential sanctions nexus is present.
  • Advising a leading global pharmaceuticals exporter regarding the seizures of medical products by UK authorities under sanctions regulations.
