Ryan is a trial lawyer and registered patent attorney who handles complex patent litigation before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), U.S. district courts, USPTO Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), and Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC).
Ryan has significant experience in all phases of patent litigation and has taken multiple cases from inception through trial, including leading discovery efforts, drafting key motions, taking and defending depositions, and examining fact and expert witnesses at trial.
In addition to litigation, Ryan’s practice also includes intellectual property counseling in connection with corporate restructuring and investment, mergers and acquisitions, and bankruptcy for multinational corporations.
Prior to joining Akin, Ryan served for more than seven years as a patent examiner at the USPTO, where he examined patent applications in the art of interactive video distribution. As a result of his government service, Ryan has significant experience in claim construction and invalidity analysis. As a patent examiner, he also had the opportunity to brief more than a dozen appeals before the PTAB and its predecessor, the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences.
Ryan also maintains an active pro bono practice covering a wide range of subject areas. Ryan’s pro bono work includes representing armed forces members and civil servants in appellate matters related to their service, assisting individuals who have been persecuted in their home countries seeking asylum in the United States, landlord-tenant disputes, and working with the homeless in the District of Columbia.
- Defended VIZIO in ITC investigations related to video processing and display technology. Served as lead associate on all discovery issues, developed technical defenses, drafted key motions and expert reports, took the lead on preparation of expert witnesses, took and defended depositions and examined expert witnesses at trial. Also assisted with advocating before the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol and in drafting post-trial motions and appeals.
- Defended one of the world’s leading Internet and software companies before the U.S. district courts in several patent litigation matters involving different technologies.
- Represented the leading developer of human interface solutions for electronic devices before the ITC in patent litigation related to touchscreen controllers.
- Represented a leading television company in several petitions for inter partes review before the PTAB.
- Represented a U.S. Army veteran before the CAFC in an appeal related to veterans’ benefits.
