Biography
  • Advises on special situations investments, restructuring and contentious matters across public and private markets in the Asia Pacific region.
  • Previously served as Asia Pacific General Counsel for a leading global alternative investment firm.

Tarun is a partner in the global special situations & private credit practice. He is based in the Hong Kong office.

Tarun has extensive experience advising on special situations investments, restructuring and contentious matters across public and private markets in Asia. He also provides strategic litigation advice to management and creditors of financially distressed companies, as well as private equity funds facing issues with portfolio companies in emerging markets. 

Prior to joining Akin, Tarun was Managing Director and APAC General Counsel at a leading global alternative investment firm specializing in credit and credit-related assets. He was previously a partner in the Restructuring and Special Situations practice at a U.S. firm.  He was recognized as a “Next Generation Partner” in Restructuring and Insolvency by The Legal 500.

Representative Work
  • Advising a credit fund on a US$200m financing to a borrower to acquire securities listed in India. 
  • Advising an ad hoc committee of holders of the US$350m and US$414m bonds issued by Azure Power Solar Energy Ltd and Azure Power Energy Ltd on a restructuring of the bonds.
  • Advising a credit investor on a US$100m External Commercial Borrowing facility to an Indian borrower.
  • Advising a credit investor on a US$200m financing to acquire listed securities issued by an Asian conglomerate. 
  • Advising a creditor of Vedanta Resources on the restructuring of its US$100m facility to Vedanta.
  • Advising a credit fund on a US$52m financing to promoters of a listed company in India
  • Advising one of the world’s leading litigation funders on the structuring and terms of funding arrangements for a company subject to a Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process in India as plaintiff in a US$2b arbitration.
  • Advised a consortium of investors on a US$500m financing and one -time settlement with existing lenders to RattanIndia Power.
  • Advised investors on bids in the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Processes of certain Indian companies.
  • Advised an ad hoc committee of holders of the US$546 m Step Up Convertible Bonds due 2019 issued by Suzlon Energy Ltd. on a restructuring of the notes.
  • Advised on the potential recapitalization and management takeover of a distressed real-estate focused PE fund.
  • Advised an ad hoc committee of holders of the US$300 m senior secured notes issued by Reliance Communications Limited on the restructuring of the notes.
  • Advised a private equity firm in relation to multi-jurisdictional claims against the founder of a Cayman incorporated portfolio company listed in Hong Kong.
  • Advised lenders under a US$500 million syndicated facility on restructuring and enforcement options against the borrower in various jurisdictions including England, Mauritius and India.
  • Advised an ad hoc committee of holders of the US$200 m 7.125% Senior Notes due 2022 issued by Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd. on a restructuring of the notes.
  • Advised IL&FS Transportation Networks Ltd. in respect of the restructuring of its offshore indebtedness (including CNY 900 m 7.5% notes due 2021 issued by its Singapore incorporated subsidiary, ITNL Offshore Pte Ltd).
  • Advised the litigation trustee of the Sino-Forest Corporation (“SFC”) on multi-jurisdictional claims arising from the collapse of SFC, a US$5 b forestry and wood products company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and headquartered in Hong Kong with operations and assets in the People’s Republic of China.
